The healing of your tattoo is the final aspect of your art piece. The opinions and advice given are endless, and there are more experts out there than tattoos. Since we guarantee our work we ask you to follow our advice and not your buddy’s that has three tattoos. Just as with a psychiatrist, you’ll probably never get the same advice or instructions from different artists. But after many years of combined experience, you will find this information very beneficial in healing your tattoo.
A tattoo normally takes anywhere from 7 to 14 days to look fully healed, depending on the type, style, size, and placement. The truth is that it can really take up to a month for a tattoo to be fully healed below the surface of the skin and for your body’s natural healing abilities to lock the ink in completely. Yes, all of these things can and will make a difference. There is no “idiot-proof” method, but if you take the time to read the following, you will stand a much better chance of healing your tattoo without any problems to ensure that it looks as good as possible.
If you are leaving the shop with it wrapped, LEAVE IT ON your tattoo for an hour, but NO MORE than 2 hours! - (unless instructed by artist otherwise because Saniderm will have different care instructions). WASH YOUR HANDS! It is crucial that you always clean your hands prior to caring for your fresh tattoo. This helps prevent the spread of germs and infection. You may remove the wrapping, wash your fresh tattoo with HOT water (please do not burn yourself) and an anti-bacterial soap that is fragrance-free (Hibiclens , Detol, Dial), and then COOL water rinse. Either air-dry your tattoo or pat it gently dry. DO NOT RUB IT! We suggest a paper towel or a disposable cloth for drying because towels and washcloths can harbor bacteria.
Our recommended care uses GRIFFIN SALVE:
Open your Griffin, and dig out a very small amount and rub it between your two fingers until it melts from your body temperature. Apply a thin layer - enough to cover your tattoo. Use your Griffin Salve until your tattoo is fully healed. Or after the tattoo is healed you switch to lotion. We recommend this method over the ointment heal because it allows the skin to breathe and heal for naturally preserving the color and brilliance of the tattoo.
If you are using a Topical Ointment:
After your tattoo dries, apply your ointment. (Aquaphor , A&D). Use it 3-4 times a day for 3 days or as needed. On the 4th day, STOP using your ointment and switch to an UNSCENTED, WATER-BASED LOTION. (Lubriderm , Aveeno). Use your lotion until your tattoo is fully healed.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR TATTOO
DO NOT LET ANYONE OR ANY ANIMAL TOUCH YOUR FRESH, HEALING TATTOO!!
If someone or something touches your tattoo – WASH IT IMMEDIATELY WITH HOT WATER and anti-bacterial soap! Make sure that they wash their hands as well.
Use your Griffin Salve or ointment sparingly! Wet and shiny means there is TOO MUCH!
Do not PICK or SCRATCH when it itches.
You can get it wet, but DO NOT SUBMERGE IT!!
Avoid direct sunlight, beaches, oceans, pools, and hot tubs.
